Shell Pennsylvania Petrochemical Complex
In June 2016, Shell Chemical Appalachia LLC (Shell) proposed plans to construct a petrochemicals complex in Potter Township, Beaver County. Shell has renamed the facility Shell Polymers Monaca Site. The facility includes an ethylene cracker that uses ethane (a natural gas product) to produce polyethylene (a common type of plastic). This first-of-its-kind facility in Pennsylvania required several complex environmental reviews, approvals, and permits from DEP for new construction, remediation of contamination from previous industrial activities on the property, and operation. The facility has been constructed and began operating in fall 2022.
Orion Engineered Carbons EPA Project
The company recently finished its final air emissions project at its plant in Belpre, Ohio. Previously the company upgraded the Borger, Texas, Ivanhoe, Louisiana, and Orange, Texas, facilities.
The upgrades were part of an initiative from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency that applied to all carbon black producers in America. The projects were especially challenging for Orion because it has more carbon black plants in the United States than any other company. Despite suffering from contractor issues, COVID-19 and supply chain disruptions, Orion finished ahead of some competitors.
280 Earth - Direct Air Carbon Capture (DAC) Plant
The first phase of the commercial demonstration facility is designed to capture up to 500 tonnes per year of CO2, as well as water, from ambient air. The captured CO2 will be liquified and sequestered off-site or used in various industrial processes, while the related water can be used for cooling or other end uses. The facility is extensively instrumented to validate scale up plans for 280 Earth’s technology as it progresses to a 5,000 tonne per year module
